- In 2012, it became a certified Community Development Finance Institution (CDFI). CDFIs are designed to fill financing gaps for low-income communities that are often left behind by traditional banks. They have a mandate to do 60 percent of their lending in low- and moderate-income (LMI) communities. SELF uses the CDFI model to make “green” loans, which mostly go towards energy efficiency and clean energy projects
- In 2020 SELF initiated pilot expansion programs in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina
- 2021/2022: received $500,000 in unrestricted funds from the Citi Foundation

Home improvement loans help all types of homeowners green their homes, and save money on their energy and insurance costs.
APPROACH
Green Bank and certified CDFI that builds relationships with local governments, financial institutions, and contractors to create alternative approaches to green finances. They also offer direct financing.
SELF’s mission is to rebuild and empower underserved communities by providing access to affordable and innovative financing for sustainable property improvements, with the primary focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and climate resilience in low- and moderate-income (LMI) neighborhoods.

- SAGE Homes Loan Program: For non-profit and for-profit, flexible loans for small to midsize affordable and workforce housing developments in LMI communities
- Energize St. Lucie County Financing Program: Uses a PACE model to help St. Lucie County, FL overcome the upfront costs of implementing energy-saving, renewable energy, and resilience projects.
